There are plenty of elk callers in the world that don't know how to Lip Bawl--and let's be honest, it truly isn't a "basic" technique utilized for calling elk. That said, if you can buzz your lips, you can do a lip ball!
When a bull incorporates a short Lip Bawl into his bugle, he is likely talking to his cows, calling his cows to him, or attempting to incorporate them into his herd. For that reason, it's an incredible effective elk calling technique when incorporated into your calling sequence appropriately.

Step 1: Master the Lip Buzz
- Before using your reed, practice buzzing your lips with your bugle tube.
- You can position the tube at the front or side of your lips—whatever feels best.
- Repeat the motion until it feels natural.
Step 2: Introduce the Reed
- Use light air pressure at first, just enough to create a small buzz.
- Let the mosquito noise come through, keeping it controlled.
Step 3: Add More Power
- To intensify the sound, increase air pressure and let the buzz get rougher.
- Adjust how firmly you press the tube against your lips to find the best tone.
Step 4: Advanced Lip Ball Technique
- Start with a clean mosquito noise.
- Gradually introduce the lip buzz.
- Towards the end, stop buzzing your lips and let the note drop off.
- Finish with a “gut punch” inflection.
- It may take time for your lips, tongue, and brain to work together—just keep practicing!
Step 5: Lip Ball in a Full Bugle
- Begin with a throat wheeze, like clearing your throat.
- Climb the octaves using your diaphragm.
- Once you hit the high note, engage the lip buzz with strong air pressure.
- The key is to ease into the sound before pushing more air.
